Rust 12

I present you one of the many ways to create some rusty texture. Let’s call it “Method No.1″

1. Create a new channel Alpha and apply Filter->Render->Difference Clouds. Use it as many times as you need to.
Rust 1

2. Set two “rusty” colours for your background and foreground. Colours used in that example are #B88038 and #281101. You can choose anything you want in brown/orange/red tone as long as one is light and the other is dark colour.

3. On a new layer use Filter->Render->Clouds
Rust 2

4. Use Filter->Render->Difference Clouds (use it twice)
Rust 3

5. Now let’s add some noise Filter>Noise>Add Noise. Here we have 4% Gaussian and Monochromatic
Rust 3a

6. Next step is Filter>Artistic>Palette Knife. Here the size is 6 and the detail is 3
Rust 4

7. Add Filter>Artistic>Plastic Wrap.
Rust 5

8. Add noise once again Filter>Noise>Add Noise
Rust 6

9. Now it’s time for experiments with Dodge and Burn tools, Remember to choose soft brush and set Exposure on 20-30%. You can also change colour and saturation (ctrl+U)
Rust 7

10. Now apply Filter>Render>Lighting Effects. You can experiment with the settings.
Rust 8

11. Now create several layer with random rusty shapes. Use the wand tool with Tolerance: 30.
Rust 9

12. Then smooth the selection Select>Modify>Smooth. Set radius on 7. Then copy from the background and paste in the new layer.
Rust 10

13. Add inner and outer shadow to rusty shapes.
Rust 11

14. You can burn, dodge and smear to make your rust beautiful :)
Rust 12
